Our Olives

We have a variety of olive trees including the Italian favourites Frantoio, Leccino and Pendolino, the Spanish variety Picual and Hardy’s Mammoth which is used as a pollinator. This mix allows easier grove management as the varieties mature at different times ensuring we can hand-pick the olives at the optimum time. In addition, the different varieties enable us to blend the oils or produce individual styles depending on yield and demand.

2011 - A different year again with all the varieties ripening earlier than usual as a result of the previous dry winter and hot, dry easterly winds in late spring which hindered good pollination. We are, however, very happy with our extra virgin olive oils and are confident they will win awards again this year.

2010 - As olive trees tend to fruit heavier every second year, this year’s harvest was a very small crop exaggerated by heavy pruning undertaken after the 2009 harvest. Therefore, we have a smaller quantity for sale but the high quality has been maintained as evidenced by our show awards.

2009 was a more difficult year for harvesting olives. Due to the delayed onset of winter rains, May and June were colder than normal and the olives did not want to ripen in a hurry. Add to this a heavy fruit set this year and we found we were not just handpicking but selectively handpicking over an extended harvest period. We decided to harvest and process the Hardys Mammoth olives for the first time as their aroma, even on the tree, was amazing. There was a beautiful aroma of banana and ripe fruit as we were picking! We were not surprised when we won a medal for this oil.
